There’s something rather special about rose season in the UK. As summer begins to unfold and gardens burst into life, the roses take centre stage, filling the air with their unmistakable fragrance and painting the landscape with some of nature’s most beautiful colours.
Recently, we spent a glorious afternoon at the Bowes-Lyon Rose Garden at RHS Wisley, and it was every bit as charming as we had hoped. The rose beds were bursting with colour, from delicate pastel shades of pink, peach and cream to snowy-white blooms and vibrant splashes of yellow. Everywhere we looked, there was another stunning display waiting to be admired.
As we wandered through the pathways, stopping to appreciate the different varieties and breathe in their wonderful scents, I found myself transported back to childhood summers spent in my grandparents’ garden. My grandfather took enormous pride in his prize-winning roses and tended them with great care and attention. As a child, I didn’t fully appreciate the work that went into creating such beautiful displays, but I was always captivated by the vivid colours, the heady fragrance and the constant buzz of visiting pollinators.
Standing amongst the roses at Wisley brought those memories flooding back. Watching bees and other pollinators move from bloom to bloom felt wonderfully familiar, a reminder of long summer afternoons spent exploring the garden while my grandfather carefully inspected his treasured plants.
Of course, no visit would be complete without bringing along a few of our own rose-inspired accessories. We packed some of our beautiful rose-themed phone cases, and they looked perfectly at home nestled amongst the blooms. Surrounded by petals in every shade imaginable, they blended effortlessly into the garden setting and made for some lovely photographs.
It’s easy to see why roses have remained such a beloved feature of British gardens for generations. Their beauty is timeless, their fragrance unforgettable and they have a unique way of connecting us to cherished memories of gardens and summers gone by.
